🦈 Traditional ecological knowledge practices that promote harmonious relationships with manō (shark) evolve over time and are passed from generation to generation

Sharks are the Guardians of the Ocean.

Sharks are key to the health of the sea. The health of the sea is the health of you and me. So, sharks are key to the health of you and me. Sharks are one of the oldest & most important animals, have been on our blue planet for 450 million years, are older than dinosaurs and trees.🦈>🦖>🌳 Sharks keep the balance of Ocean ecosystems. 🦈♾️🪸

Now, two-thirds of coral reef sharks and rays are threatened with extinction. Shark populations declined by 71% in the last 50 years.
Due to the human impact of overfishing.

YOU can help:

🙌🏽 Choose responsibly caught seafood (no shark bycatch)
🙌🏽 Re-think tuna consumption
🙌🏽 NO shark meat. It has mercury & is usually labeled as dogfish, rock salmon, some imitation crab
🙌🏽 Use 100% plant-based squalene in cosmetics (not shark squalene)
🙌🏽 NO chondroitin (no shark cartilage)
🙌🏽 Strive to be plastic-free
🙌🏽 Engage in political advocacy for Marine Protected Areas with No-take zones & enforcement; No sport permits; No finning
🙌🏽 Educate others

🌊 Protect Sharks for the health of the Ocean and You! 🦈

An example of the positive impact of this event is that one of the elders is now connected to organizations and empowered to lead her own restoration project in West Maui - the Ukumehame wetlands & seaweed restoration project. Through the awareness created, this cultural leader has keyed into partnerships, resources and confidence that has acknowledged her cultural leadership. She is now a cultural advisor for the Epic Swim Maui - a global, UN Decade project.

There are many opportunities that may be available for cultural leaders through these Indigenous Knowledge Talk Stories, including the launch of a new restoration project, increased social media engagement, building partnerships, new eco-visitor experiences to their restoration sites and increased cultural workshop engagement to perpetuate culture and revitalize community.

Testimonials:

'People on are crying for this kind of heartfelt event that brings Native Hawaiian knowledge and practices to the forefront.'

'We felt that we can gather to share the issues, our hearts and the restoration solutions in a safe space. Thank you for creating a safe space for us to network and co-create solutions that benefit the restoration and conservation of the land and waters and the healing of the people.'

(these talk stories, held in the evenings were at maximum capacity of 130 people, with a waiting list to get in)

Alisha Shanti Chauhan Bio

Through a blend of Indigenous and Western science, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands—one of the most wild, vast, remote, ecologically and culturally important coral reef ecosystems—can be understood and preserved as a global model.

At this critical moment on our Blue Planet, I feel honored to be contributing to the care and health of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and the Hawaiian Islands - as the health of these islands and humanity are interconnected. May we all come together as a community, whenever and wherever we can, to learn from and protect this gem of a place, sustaining its waters, lands and biodiverse beings for generations to come—
”He waʻa he moku, he moku he waʻa”.

As an Indian American, Alisha Shanti Chauhan cultivated her passion for Nature during her formative years in Africa's safari lands and her family life in Canada instilled a respect for Nature based-solutions, inspiring her to blend the arts and culture for watershed restoration.

With a degree in Biology and Writing, she has two decades of environmental conservation experience in sensitive, remote places, from the Arctic to the islands of Hawai`i, bridging Indigenous communities with multi-stakeholders for Ocean-Climate resilience.

Alisha co-created the Canadian Climate Change Adaptation Planning Tool-Kit for Indigenous Communities and protective policy at the advent of mining in pristine Arctic watersheds, co-led large-scale, low impact development retrofits along Toronto’s waterfronts, and educated keiki with Reef Guardians Hawai`i and more.

Based on Maui, she builds community capacity for Blue-Green resilience through her Ocean Story ACTS | Blue Champion Changemakers program, serves as an Advisory Member of the Papahānaumokuākea Reserve Advisory Council. She loves being in the ocean, sharing her original songs about Mother Nature, and teaching youth to be advocates for our better future.

She believes that Indigenous science is integral for restoration and that the power of community connection through education and action is key to coordinating tangible solutions for our harmonious relation with Planet Ocean, and essentially ourselves—the Ocean connects us all.
